Driving in England is different than driving in the United States. The steering wheel is on the right side of the car and people drive on the left side of the road. Circles or “roundabouts” can also be challenging. It is suggested that you rent a car with automatic transmission so you have one less thing to concentrate on while getting acquainted with the English roads. Please make sure to plot the cities in the direction you are traveling because exit signs list the cities in the direction the road is going as opposed to ‘east’, ‘west’, ‘south’, etc. The roads in the UK are well marked but you must pay close attention to the signs, particularly when approaching roundabouts where most routes join. Generally, you will see two directional signs, the first (green background) points to more distant destinations and the second (white background) points to local destinations. Motorways are just like highways and are marked with blue signs. “A” routes are major routes that do not qualify as motorways. “A” routes are marked with green signs.
From London/Heathrow Airport
- Leave Heathrow and follow the signs toward M4 West
- Look for Watford/Oxford/M1 to M40
- Take Motorway M40 west towards Oxford
- Stay on M40 past Oxford (exit 7) and continue for approximately 21km to exit 10 and north onto route A43
- Continue north on A43 towards Northampton for 6km to a west exit onto route B4031
- Go west towards the village of Croughton for approximately 2km to the Main Gate of RAF Croughton on the left (south) side of route B4031
- Follow directions below “From Main Gate to Community Center”
From London/Gatwick Airport
- Leave Gatwick and take the M-23
- At Burstow, turn left onto M23
- Get on the M25 going west toward Heathrow (clockwise direction around London)
- You will be on the M25 for approximately 58km
- At M25-M40 intersection, turn left onto M40 for approximately 74km
- At Ardley, bear right onto A43
- Continue north on A43 towards Northampton for 6km to a west exit onto route B4031
- Go west towards the village of Croughton for approximately 2km to the Main Gate of RAF Croughton on the left (south) side of route B4031
- Follow directions below “From Main Gate to Community Center”
From the Main Gate to the Community Center
- Go to the Visitor’s Center at Gate 43 to sign in with your passport/ID and vehicle information (registration and proof of insurance)
- Go straight through the Main Gate and make a right at Bldg. 50, the Base Gym (there is no street sign but gym is on corner)
- Follow this until you reach a T intersection, at the T intersection, make a left
- Parking lots and the community center are on your right, 100 feet up the road from the T
