The George Washington Data Sciences Department is pleased to offer a variety of courses at no cost to conference participants. These courses will take place on Thursday, November 8th, 2018, and encompass an array of disciplines within the data world. The courses will offer the chance to work directly with professors at GW as well as other key players in the data community. These complementary courses have limited availability and are first come first serve. You must be registered to attend DC DATACON on Wednesday, November 7th to be eligible for the complimentary Crash Courses. Continuing Education Credits (CEC) will be available.

Overview Neural Networks:

8:00am – 9:30am

Every wonder want all the buzz is about? This session will cover at a high-level the engine driving a typical Neural Network and why this do-it-all algorithm has become so popular.
Dr. Amir Jafari – GWU Data Science Deep Learning Professor

Bayesian Modelling:

9:30am – 11:00am

Overview of the foundational elements of Bayesian-based models. Including examples of algorithms that utilize a Bayesian approach.
Dr. James Huang – GWU Data Science Machine Learning and Bayesian Statistics Professor

Lunch On Your Own

11:00am – 12:00pm

(We suggest that you invite one of our presenters to join you to get a little extra time and attention)

Penalized Regression for Dimensionality Reduction:

12:00pm – 1:30pm

Feature selection using LASSO/Ridge/Elastic Net regression methods that include a learned penalty term to increase generalizability are becoming increasingly popular. An overview of these techniques and examples of them in action will be provided.
Dr. Brian Wright, Co-Director GWU Data Science Graduate Programs

Selling Data Science:

1:30pm – 3:00pm

Are we introverted, or are they kinda boring? We Data Scientists are stereotyped as introverted, but DC2 knows that the right environment encourages us to go down the proverbial rabbit hole, where we open-up, we are engaging, and we build great relationships. Selling Data Science harnesses this confidence and builds a clear path up and down the rabbit hole for those unfamiliar but interested. Learn how to be their guide, help them to see what you see, and to paint a win-win vision where the obvious answer is “Yes”.
