Dr. Thomas A. Campbell
National Intelligence Officer for Technology, National Intelligence Council, Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI)
Dr. Thomas A. Campbell is the National Intelligence Officer for Technology within the National Intelligence Council (NIC) at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). Recently, he was the associate director for outreach and a research associate professor with the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS, http://www.ictas.vt.edu/) at Virginia Tech, and a non-resident senior fellow with the Strategic Foresight Initiative of the Atlantic Council (http://www.atlanticcouncil.org). While at Virginia Tech, he conceptualized, proposed and facilitated multi-million dollar, multi-principal investigator program and proposal developments in interdisciplinary science and technology. He has written and spoken extensively on a wide range of S&T topics - with over sixty peer reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings and reports; dozens of internal industry reports and memos; dozens of patent applications and full patents in multiple disciplines; and over sixty invited presentations and conference keynotes. He has received numerous honors, including several best paper and conference presentation awards.
Dr. Campbell joined Virginia Tech from ADA Technologies, Inc., where he was senior research scientist and nanotechnology program manager. Prior to ADA Technologies, he was with Saint- Gobain, Inc., as a research scientist, and he was an Alexander von Humboldt research fellow at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität (Freiburg, Germany). He speaks German and has reading knowledge of French. He holds a Ph.D. (funded by a NASA Graduate Student Researcher Program fellowship) in Aerospace Engineering Sciences from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering with Honors from Vanderbilt University.
