Additonal Information

Expo Location

For maximum attendee participation and to accommodate outdoor demos, the Expo will take place in an open-air area leading to the conference center of the Hilton Cabo Verde Sal Resort. Because the location is open-air, exhibitors will need to breakdown their displays each night and re-set up each morning.

Electricity

Cape Verde operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz and uses plug types C and F (similar to those in the EU). Electric outlets will be limited, please inform NCSI in advance if you require power and if it will draw a large about of electricity so we can make special accommodations for your exhibit.

Travel

Visas can be obtained upon arrival at any of the four international airports. SID is the airport located on Sal. There are only a few flights a day to reach the island, so please plan accordingly. For more visa information visit: http://www.embcv-usa.gov.cv/index.php/consular.

Getting Around

A taxi from SID airport should take around 15 minutes to reach the Hilton Cabo Verde Sal Resort and should cost around 10-15 Euros. Taxis are able to be arranged at the hotel desk. Usually, you can pay in both Euros or Escudos.

Santa Maria, the city where the Hilton is located is a small, safe, resort town. There are sidewalks and a ‘boardwalk’ along the beach. From the Hilton, it is a 20-30 minute walk to the ‘downtown’ where you can find restaurants and small shops.

Currency

The official currency of Cape Verde is the escudo, abbreviated CVE and indicated with a cifrão (a symbol similar to the dollar sign, but with two vertical strokes instead of one) after the amount. The exchange rate is approximately 1USD to 95 Escudo or 1Euro to 110 Escudo. They do not typically take AMEX or Discover, usually just Visa and sometimes Mastercard.

To get out Escudos, you can exchange money at the hotel desk or visit the Casino ATM located right next to the Hilton.

Language

Portuguese is the official language in Cabo Verde, the local language is Cape Verdean Creole. For the attendees of AE, English, French, and Portuguese are the three major languages spoken by most African countries; please provide materials in these languages when possible. Translators will be in the hall during expo hours.

Doing Business

Familiarize yourself with the countries embassy Office of Defense Cooperation and AFRICOM’s FMS program. The U.S. Department of Defense's Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program facilitates sales of U.S. arms, defense equipment, defense services, and military training to foreign governments. These are the major avenues from which these nations can acquire new technologies. Exhibitors are welcome to collect contact information of the participants, but be mindful they do not have purchasing power. They will work via their embassy to procure equipment. Attendees will expect companies to address how they can meet current capability gaps, they are looking to be educated on your solutions. Brush up on the current environment on the continent, understand their processes/problems, and explain how your solution meets those needs.
